Over the years, how has the academic perspective on blockchain technology evolved, and where do you see it heading in the next five years?

The academic perspective on blockchain has transformed over the years, evolving from initial skepticism to recognition of its disruptive potential. In the next five years, research will continue to explore the potential of blockchains in various sectors, from supply chains to finance, and address sustainability, scalability, and regulatory challenges. The integration of blockchains with emerging technologies like AI and IoT will be an important point, driving innovation and cross-sector collaboration.

You've written extensively on crypto assets. In your opinion, what are the top three factors that will determine the long-term viability of a crypto asset in today's market?

The long-term viability of crypto assets depends on several factors. Regulatory clarity is necessary, as alignment with evolving crypto laws supports investor confidence. Continued technological innovation is essential for enhancing security, scalability, and real-world utility. Beyond speculation, crypto assets must demonstrate use cases, underlining their long-term value in today's competitive market.

With the rise of stablecoins, there's been a lot of debate about their impact on traditional financial systems. From an academic standpoint, what are the primary challenges and opportunities they present?

While Stablecoins offer many benefits including low transaction cost and an instant settlement allowing efficient cross-border transactions and the opportunity for more financial inclusion, they raise concerns about regulatory compliance and systemic risks, and the potential for market dominance by a few large players. Academics will continue studying stablecoins' economic and social implications, their integration with central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), and their potential to reshape traditional financial systems.

The metaverse is gaining traction rapidly. How do you envision blockchain playing a role in the development and governance of future metaverse platforms?

In the emerging metaverse landscape, blockchain technology will have an important role in both its development and governance, providing transparency, security, and ownership rights within virtual worlds, and facilitating the creation and trade of digital assets. Decentralized governance through smart contracts will empower users to form the metaverse while minimizing centralized control. The virtual worlds of the metaverse will not only be developed by established companies but also by the decentralized blockchain ecosystem.

As an investor, what are the key indicators you look for in a blockchain project or startup before deciding to invest?

When considering investments in blockchain projects or startups, key indicators include the expertise and track record of the team, the technological innovation and scalability potential, the clarity of their use case and market fit, and compliance with regulatory standards. Additionally, the community support and partnerships can significantly impact long-term success. Diversification and a long-term perspective are crucial in navigating the volatile nature of the blockchain investment landscape.
